The Blue Water Point Motel, Marina & Resort opened for business in 1978, and was purchased by the Mickey family of High Point, NC in the mid-‘90s. The patriarch of the family, Carl Mickey, Sr., (1920 – 2007) was a regular vacationer, boater and home owner in Oak Island, often piloting his Beechcraft Baron airplane from High Point to the local Oak Island airport with his wife, son and 2 daughters.

Over the years Mr. Mickey made several major improvements to the Motel and Marina, including floating slips, renovated hotel guest rooms and common areas, and the addition of one of the most popular restaurants on the Island. In 2015 Oak Island’s Eastern Channel dredging project cleared most of the Eastern Channel of the Lockwood Folly River and Blue Water, which cleared a 55-foot wide channel to a depth of seven to 11 feet, depending on the tide, and making it much easier and safer for boaters to navigate the area around the Marina.

About Oak Island

The Town boasts 65 public beach accesses on miles of sandy beaches, as well as fishing docks and piers, boat ramps and many other access points to the Intracoastal Waterway and the Davis Canal, making it the perfect location for fishing, boating, kayaking and other water activities. The Town covers much of the island and includes areas on the mainland around both bridges, such as the golf course community of South Harbour Village.

Ownership of the Blue Water Point Motel, Marina & Resort remains in the Mickey family, with Carl Mickey, Jr., at the helm and following in his father’s footsteps by continuously enhancing the amenities and services of the facility. Day-to-day operations are handled by “Captain” Sid Merrill, a full-time resident of Oak Island and experienced boater, fisherman and all around nice guy. On any given day you can find Sid behind the counter of The Ship Store, welcoming guests to the Motel or Restaurant, or out at the slips greeting boaters as they pull into the Marina.
